Volunteering at Twenty10
Volunteers are essential in supporting the work of the Twenty10 staff
People volunteer in a number of ways at Twenty10. Our funding agreement stipulates that our volunteers need to be over the age of 26 (although there are a few opportunities for people under 26 who want to help out in a less formalised way).
Our volunteers mostly help out at Twenty10 in Newtown, and sometimes at other locations including our Out West Group in Parramatta. We generally ask volunteers to make a commitment of at least 4 hours once a month for a minimum of 12 months.
Groups Volunteer and Drop-In Volunteer both work directly alongside young people (although not in a therapeutic or counselling sense) either in our drop in space (week days during office hours) or through group activities (Saturday afternoons and sometimes weeknight evenings).

Some people prefer to help out behind the scenes, by volunteering on our cooking crew who prepare batches of meals in advance for our drop in clients.

The Twenty10 Board is made up of volunteers who contribute their time and skills to ensuring that the governance of Twenty10 is sound and supporting the work of the staff. To express interest or learn more about the Board, please contact Terence: volunteering@twenty10.org.au
We are always keen to hear ideas from people about how they would like to contribute their skills in other ways too!
How are Volunteers Selected and Trained?
Our process for recruiting volunteers is that we hold a Volunteer Information Night to provide people with the answers to their questions about Twenty10, our services and volunteering opportunities at Twenty10. The evening is also an integral part of our selection process but it is obligation free - so you aren't committed to volunteer or attend training (nor is attendance at the Information Night a guarantee of an invitation into our volunteer program). The aim of the evening is to provide you with the answers to your questions about volunteering opportunities at Twenty10, our training program, our services etc. It is obligation free - you aren't committed to attend the training (nor is attendance a guarantee of acceptance into our volunteer program).
Following the information night we will review all applications received, and select some to be part of our volunteer program. Normally we have more interest than we realistically take on so we need to limit our intake choosing those we feel will be the best fit for our clients and our organisation.
For those who are invited to join our Volunteer Program, we offer a comprehensive induction program including a Training Night. All our new volunteers, regardless of role, attend the training which ensures they are well informed of the values and practices of Twenty10 so that we can all work together for the benefit of our young marginalised clients.
To complete our induction process, our inductees shadow some of our more experienced volunteers over three shifts (these would likely be spaced over a month or two). Those who are invited to join our Volunteer Training Program are also required to complete a Volunteer Declaration for a Working With Children Check. This record needs to be provided to our Managing Director to ensure that each volunteer meets our legal and contractual requirements.
When is the next Induction or Information Night?
We hold two inductions for volunteers each year:
February/March 2012 intake:
Volunteer Information Night, - Tuesday Feb 21, 2012
Training (by invitation only) - Tuesday March 20, 2012
July 2012 intake:
Information Night - Tuesday July 17, 2012
Training (by invitation only)- Tuesday July 31, 2012.
If you are intertested in attending, let us know and we can add your name and email address to a confidential mailing list, and send you an email outlining the details when the date for the next Information Night has been set: volunteering@twenty10.org.au
