
Community Calendar is your weekly look into what’s coming up for the LGBTIQA+ communities in Greater Sydney and NSW! This is our post for 16 July 2021.

Online Events
Here are some interesting things happening online:
- headspace is holding online mental health education sessions for parents and carers. These sessions will help you strengthen your skills and learn about support services available in your area. Sessions are running from July to September – find your local one here.
- Starting 29 July, we’ll be co-facilitating a group on Thursdays for LGBTIQA+ young people aged 16-25 in the Georges River and Sutherland Shire area with headspace Hurstville! These groups will be online until it’s safe to meet in person again.
Opportunities:
- Black Dog Institute is looking for folks aged 12-18 years old to join their Youth Lived Experience Group. This is a paid opportunity!
- The Aurora Group has opened the Hashim Grants Round, which is newly established for projects and causes specifically for LGBTIQ+ Muslim communities and LGBTIQ+ people with a lived experience of Islam. Applications are open until 5pm on 1 August.
- Issue 2 of YOUth&I, a literary journal for intersex young people under 30, is currently accepting submissions! Submissions are open until 13 August. This year’s prompt: It’s their turn to listen.
- The Outstanding LGBTQIA+ Short Story Contest is open until 1 September. This year’s theme: Ooops!
- Attention students! The Pinnacle Foundation Scholarships are now open for applications until 15 September.
Surveys, studies and consultations
- Attention trans folks aged 18-24! Researchers from the University of New England are keen to hear from members of the trans young-adult community about their gender transition experiences from school, in an effort to highlight the positive aspects of being trans and to inspire school communities to better support the psychological wellbeing of trans and gender diverse students.
- A researcher at Curtin University wants to hear from non-binary folks aged 18+ about their experiences with GPs.
- UnLeash is a study exploring lesbian, bisexual and queer women’s (cisgender and transgender) health and wellbeing and the relationship with smoking, drinking and using drugs.
- If you identify as LGBTIQA+ and have been in a relationship, you can give your input on intimate partner violence through this anonymous 15 min survey. You do not need to have experienced intimate partner violence to participate.
- LGBTIQ+ Health Australia wants to hear about the LGBTIQA+ community’s thoughts about and experiences with palliative care.
- The folks at Blaq, ACON and the Institute for Culture and Society at Western Sydney University are looking for LGBTIQA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people between 14 and 25 years old to fill out a survey to understand social and emotional wellbeing and mental health of people in this group. Fill out the survey here.
- ACON and UNSW are looking for gay, bisexual and queer Asian men aged 18+ to fill out the Gay Asian Men’s Survey. Available in English, Thai, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
- ACON and a number of other services around the country are looking to hear from LGBTIQA+ folks aged 18+ who have ever used an LGBTIQA+ peer-led service (that would include Twenty10).
